Robert Carl “Bud” McFarlane was the National Security Advisor to President Ronald Reagan, serving from 1983 to 1985. McFarlane made the decision to resign in December of 1985 and roughly a year later in 1986, the Iran-Contra affair was exposed. McFarlane pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor counts of withholding information from congress and was found guilty but was later pardoned by President George H.W. Bush. Following the Iran-Contra affair, McFarlane went on to co-found McFarlane Associates Inc. and currently serves on several boards including the Washington Institute for Near East Policy
