Senator George J. Mitchell has had a long and distinguished career. He is currently Chairman Emeritus of the international law firm DLA Piper. Previously, he served as a United States District judge; as Majority Leader of the United States Senate; as Chairman of peace negotiations in Northern Ireland which resulted in an agreement that ended an historic conflict; and most recently as U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East. In 2008 Time Magazine named him as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. For six consecutive years he was voted the most respected member of the United States Senate by a bipartisan group of senior Congressional aides. After leaving the Senate he created a college scholarship fund for needy students which has since provided nearly $9 million in direct assistance to almost 2,000 students.
