Rattler Tour Launches in Silicon Valley

THE RATTLER TOUR COMING

TO KEPLER’S BOOKS

Dr. Edward O. Wilson, Rebecca D. Costa and Dr. Michael Merzenich

to Appear at Town Hall Discussion About What Must be Done to

Break Gridlock and Overcome Our Most Dangerous Threats

MONTEREY, CAOctober 4, 2010 The newly launched Rattler Tour makes its way to Kepler’s Books in Menlo Park on October 14.  This interactive town hall-style meeting provides a frank, unscripted discussion about how to break the gridlock which prevents us from solving our greatest threats: terrorism, a worldwide recession, the rapid depletion of the earth’s resources, climate change, pandemic viruses, obesity and declining education.

Featuring renowned naturalist and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Dr. Edward O. Wilson, the panel includes Rebecca D. Costa, provocative author of the newly released book, The Watchman’s Rattle: Thinking Our Way Out of Extinction, and Dr. Michael M. Merzenich, professor emeritus of neuroscience at UCSF and founder of Posit Science. The discussion will be moderated by best-selling author, senior journalist for US News & World Report and Stanford lecturer, Thomas Hayden.

The Rattler Tour was inspired by Costa’s book, which will be released nationwide on October 12 by the Perseus Books Group.  According to the author: “In earlier times, ordinary citizens volunteered as watchmen to protect communities.  They patrolled neighborhoods, lighthouses and important institutions, watching for early signs of danger.  The sound of the watchman’s rattle was an alarm – a call for citizens to wake from their sleep and quickly join forces against danger.”

Modern rattlers like Al Gore have sounded the alarm about climate change; Queen Noor about the growing dangers of nuclear proliferation; and Bill Gates about the spread of preventable disease.  This innovative tour brings leading experts, thought leaders and pioneers in the fields of economics, science, education, entertainment, business and politics directly to the public for the purpose of a “no-holds-barred” discussion.

“No more spinning or re-packaging the facts,” Costa proclaims, “People want to hear the truth from the source, not from biased interpreters who got us into this mess.”  The Rattler Tour gives experts a forum to engage in unscripted conversations with the public about what must be done for humankind to move forward. At present, over 50 nationwide panel discussions are planned with incoming requests for additional stops mounitng every day.

Dr. Edward O. Wilson echoes Costa’s sentiment, “Never has there been a time when the unification of knowledge – consilience – played so important a role in determining the future of life on earth.  The Rattler Tour is a ‘coming together’ of engaged and concerned minds.”

Panelists and moderators differ for each location and organizers are quick to point out that The Rattler Tour has no religious, political, business or other affiliation. It begins in Silicon Valley, at Kepler’s Books, on October 14, from 7pm to 8:00pm.  Admission is free and no tickets are needed.
