Library Journal, the oldest and most esteemed publication covering the library industry, has chosen Rebecca D. Costa’s The Watchman’s Rattle: Thinking Our Way Out of Extinction as one of the best science and technology books of 2010.

Books were chosen under several headings, with The Watchman’s Rattle honored by reviewer Gregg Sapp as one of two best selections for the Philosophy of Science category. Sapp released his list of winners on December 16 in Library Journal’s official newsletter Booksmack!, and online at http://www.libraryjournal.com.

“The significance of the subject matter is what put The Watchman’s Rattle over the top for me,” said Sapp. “It was a nice complement to my list of best selections, and it certainly stands on its own as a must-read.”

With nearly 7,000 books reviewed annually in the pages of Library Journal, Costa said she is humbled by the fact that hers was part of a small number chosen to be among the best.

“As a true believer in the value of libraries, I am deeply honored to be recognized by that field’s premier publication,” said Costa.

Numerous accolades have been bestowed upon The Watchman’s Rattle, including positive reviews in Library Journal, Inc. Magazine, CNN’s Larry King Live, The Huffington Post, and The New York Journal of Book Reviews. The book has also received endorsements by well known thought leaders such as Dr. Edward O. Wilson, Sir Richard Branson, Trudie Styler, Donald Trump, Bill Bradley, and Temple Grandin. Foreign rights have been secured by some of the largest international publishing houses, including those in China, Korea, Brazil, the UK and Australia. Hollywood has also taken notice, as film rights for the book are currently being discussed with several well-known producers who have an interest in adapting it into a full-length feature. In addition, it has also led to the launch of Rattler Radio – a weekly talk show where Costa offers in-depth commentary on current events and interviews with experts from around the globe.

The Watchman’s Rattle is a lead title by Vanguard Press, a member of the Perseus Books Group, and was released nationwide on October 12, 2010. It speaks to our ability to thrive in the complex world we have created. It posits that the escalating complexity of our personal lives, technological capabilities, and governmental policies have led to conditions that have outpaced our ability to manage them – such as worldwide recession, global warming, and pandemic viruses. However, Costa offers an opportunity to address it, by revealing scientific evidence that the human brain can be retrained to comprehend, analyze, and resolve massively complex problems.

Additional information can be found at http://www.rebeccacosta.com, including reviews, articles, videos, archived Rattler Radio shows and upcoming appearances.

Rebecca D. Costa is a sociobiologist whose unique expertise is to spot and explain emerging trends in relationship to human evolution, global markets, and new technologies. A popular speaker at thought-leader and technology conferences, as well as major universities, she is the former CEO of Silicon Valley start-up Dazai Advertising, Inc., where her clients included such innovators as Apple Computer, Hewlett-Packard, Oracle Corporation, 3M, Amdahl, Siebel Systems and General Electric. She currently hosts a weekly talk radio show broadcast to the Central Coast region of California, and soon to other markets around the country.
